Complete Blood Count (CBC) without Differential

What it measures

A CBC counts your red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It also measures hemoglobin. The version without a differential gives the total white cell count but does not split white cells into their types.

When it’s ordered

Checkups, tiredness, suspected anemia or infection, easy bruising, and follow-up on medicines that can affect the blood.

Medicare coverage

Governed by NCD 190.15 (Blood Counts). This national rule works in reverse from most. It lists the diagnoses that do NOT support the test, and a claim billed with one of them can be denied.

Typical price

Medicare pays a set rate of $6.47 for this test (2026 fee schedule). When Medicare covers this test, you pay nothing. A lab can bill far more if you pay on your own or if Medicare denies the claim, so ask for the price first.

One thing to watch

If the order says only "routine exam," ask whether a specific symptom or condition can be added.
